Brief Meeting

RL Date: 4/3/99

[Weaver/Tanner Courtyard]

Jaden wanders out of the dorm, sorting though a basket slung over his arm.

Piet is draped more or less casually over one of the benches, some sort of project spread out on his lap which seems to require his close attention. He's recovering from an unpleasant cold, and takes a second every now and then to turn his face away and cough.

Jaden looks up at the sound, and blinks twice. "Oh. Hallo," he greets in a friendly tone, offering a smile. He resettles the basket on his arm, tucking red fabric back inside.

Piet glances up, murmuring briefly "Oh. Hello," and then, in the archetype of double takes, looks again. "Oh. *Hello*."

Jaden's cheeks pinken slightly at the double look, but he still smiles, seeming to be attempting to see what you’re working on, and watch you at the same time, coming closer. "I'm Jaden," he offers.

Piet has visibly forgotten *all* about what he was working on. "Oh, you are. Good. Wonderful," he says, apparently sincerely, and he might have gone on like that if not interrupted by another small cough. He frowns in slight annoyance at his own health and offers a faintly apologetic smile. "Excuse me. I'm Master Piet."

Jaden tilts his head slightly, then blinks once more at the introduction. "Oh." He flounders, wondering if he should apologize for not being busy. "Pleasure to meet you," he comes up with after a moment, and smiles again, a bit more hesitantly.

Piet may not actually have blinked since you came into his field of vision. "Oh, yes. Absolutely. The pleasure's mine, I assure you. You're new." He'd have noticed you before if you weren't.

Jaden nods in agreement, and lifts one slender hand to brush his bangs from his eyes, temporarily. "Yes, I am. This is only my second day here."

Piet says "Ah. Yes. Well. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you get settled. Of course."

Jaden smiles brightly, warming up to the conversation. "I was just going to go work on some embroidery in the garden. It's cooler in there, I find. This heat is awful, don't you think?"

Piet glances up at the sky, stifling a small cough. "Now that you mention it, it *is*." He starts folding up the stuff on his lap.

[And then Piet's player had to go]
